Welcome to Volunteer Lawyers for Justice

VLJ recruits and trains volunteers to provide free civil legal assistance to low income clients throughout New Jersey. Volunteers include: solo practitioners; administrative staff, associates and partners from small, mid-sized and large law firms in New Jersey and New York City; corporate in-house legal departments; and students from a number of area law schools. VLJ operates seven distinct projects, all providing free services to financially eligible clients referred from community organizations. VLJ is supported entirely by gifts and grants.

Our volunteers have made a difference in the lives of many. They
have assisted:

  • A cancer patient execute a will, health care proxy and advanced directive so that his wishes were made known.

  • A child with autism receive special education services denied her but to which she was entitled.

  • A child with quadriplegia secure a breath-propelled wheelchair in order to live more independently rather than in a nursing home.

There are thousands more like them who need help yet do not have the funds to retain legal assistance. VLJ’s volunteers, funders and community partners work together to help meet the need.
